Marxism Flashcards
What is marxism
Marxism looks at society and how the working class are oppressed and exploited
What do marxists believe is the main cause of crime
Capitalism
What 2 social classes are there
Bourgeoisie (rich), proletariat (poor)
What does criminogenic mean
A system, situation or place causing or likely to cause criminal behaviour
According to marxism, ehat are the 3 explanations for crime
Capitalism is criminogenic, selective enforcement, ideological functions of the law
What values does capitalism breed
Competition, consumerism, individualism, selfishness, greed, envy
How does selective law making effect public perception
Gives the impression society is threatened by the crimes of the poor, not of the powerful
What does “ideological function of the law” mean
Crime and deviance is defined by the ruling class and used as a mean of social control
Strengths of marxism
Other theorists support the idea that capitalism is criminogenic, provides an explanation for crime which covers all social classes
Weaknesses of marxism
Not all capitalist societies have high crime rates (japan), too deterministic
