Martin Luthur King Flashcards
What were the aims of Martin Luther King when it came to Civil Rights?
. King like Booker T was an integrationist who sought equality, with white cooperation, however he focused more on the political field rather than the economic field.
What organisation did King with the help of others establish in 1957?
. The SCLC or The Southern Church Leadership Conference
. The SCLC was essentially the organisation which King used in the various Civil Rights events in Southern America e.g. Alabama to Montgomery or Selma
What were the positives surrounding King?
. King unlike other Civil Right leaders took a major role in the actual protests themselves, as a result of this he made himself out to be the figurehead of Civil Rights, this in turn gathered the movement much support from both Blacks and Whites.
. The scale of activity which King was a part of, put heavy pressure on the Administration and as a result made it possible for Civil Rights legislature to be passed.
. Ultimately Kings activities enabled the Civil Rights Act in 1963
What are the criticisms of King?
. King like Washington did garner criticism from African Americans for working too closely with Whites, some e.g. Malcolm X even accused him of cosying up to Whites.
. Despite him being a very effective Figurehead, King was no organiser and as a result of this his leadership at times can be seen as inconsistent and hesitant.
