Cohabitation means living together as a couple without being married. 10% of the adult population are cohabiting. This has risen rapidly over the past 50 years. For non-married women aged under 60, the proportion cohabiting in Great Britain almost doubled from 13% to 25% between 1986 and 1998-99. For men, it more than doubled from 11% to 26% over the same time period.

Secularisation-less religious influence- Living together as a couple without being formally married is no longer seen as ‘living in sin’. The idea that people should get married if they have children is also fading away. In 1989, 7 in 10 people held this view. By 2001 the proportion had fallen to just over half (54%). Nor is there much support these days for the belief that married couples make better parents – only 1 in 4 (27%) think this is the case. (British Social Attitudes Report 2001
