What are the regulations for the control of sewage from ships?
MARPOL Annex IV
All vessels over 400gt or vessels under 400gt carrying more than 15 passengers are required to have one of the following:
• A sewage treatment plant
• A sewage comminuting and disinfecting system for the temporary stowage when the ship is less than 3 miles from land
• A sewage holding tank
Discharge
Sewage from a comminuted and disinfected sewage system can be discharge no less than 3 miles from the nearest land, or;
Untreated sewage can be discharged no less than 12 miles from the nearest land, providing the vessel is en route at not less than 4 knots and not origination from animals, or;
The vessel has an approved sewage treatment plant.
In all cases there shall be no visible solids of cause discoloration of the surrounding water.
What are the regulations for the control of pollution by oil?
MARPOL Annex I
The regulations govern the discharges of oil from all ships. The apply to all Special Areas and all Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas (PSSA).
The discharge of oil or oily mixtures is prohibited except when the stringent conditions are satisfied.
The UK domestic legislation to implement this Annex is the Merchant Shipping (Prevention of Oil Pollution)(Amendment) Regulation 2005
Every oil tanker over 150gt and every other vessel over 400gt are required to carry a Shipboard Oil Pollution Prevention Plan approved by their flag state.
What are the regulations for the control of pollution by noxious liquid substances in bulk?
MARPOL Annex II
The regulations apply to all ships carrying noxious liquid substances in bulk and contain provisions to reduce operational and accidental pollution. They require ships to be fitted with equipment to reduce the amount of residues in the ship’s cargo tanks to the minimum when unloading.
