Marine Zooplankton Flashcards
What are the two groups of Zooplankton?
Holoplankton & meroplankton.
What are holoplankton?
- Type of zooplankton
- ‘entirely drifters’.
What are meroplankton?
- Type of zooplankton
- ‘partly drifters’.
What are pleuston?
Organisms which live at the water-air interface e.g. cyanobacteria.
What are neuston?
Organisms which live on or right below the surface of the water e.g. whirligig beetles.
Define tychopelagic.
A reference to organisms (tiny creatures) that are normally existing in the benthic (bottom), but which have been carried up into the liquid column by chance factors.
What is the size range of nanoplankton?
2 - 20um.
What is the size range or microplankton?
20 - 200um.
What is the size range of mesoplankton?
0.2 - 20mm.
What is the size range of macroplankton?
2 - 20cm.
What is megaplankton?
Over 20cm.
Describe a WP-2 net.
- Deployed vertically
- Monofilament nylon mesh, typically 200um
- Can be ‘throttled’.
Describe a CalCOFI net ‘ring trawl’.
- Larger 1m diameter
- Towed horiontally
- Mesh typically 500 - 1000um.
What is MOCNESS?
Multiple Opening & Closing Net & Environmental Sensing System.
How can plankton be detected?
- Plankton pumps
- High frequency echosounders
- Video systems.
