marine environment Flashcards
supralittoral zone
The supralittoral is above the high-tide mark and is usually not under water. (splash zone)
eulittoral (intertidal) zone
The region of the shore between the highest and lowest extent of the tides
sublittoral (infralittoral ) zone
The sublittoral is the environment beyond the low-tide mark and is often used to refer to substrata of the continental shelf, which reaches depths of between 150 and 300 metres.
phytoplankton
Single–celled and filamentous algal protists and cyanobacteria suspended in the water column.
zooplankton
Zooplankton are the animal (or heterotrophic) component of the planktonic community
mangrove
Small tree growing rooted in mud subjected to tidal inundation, with a leaf canopy in the air above.
countercurrent
Flow of two fluids in opposite directions along two closely-opposed vessels, allowing the transfer of heat, solutes, gases, etc from one fluid to the other.
