inland aquatic environment/ terrestrial environment/ The future Flashcards
trophogenic (euphotic) zone
In this zone the production of biochemical energy through photosynthesis is greater than its consumption through respiration and decomposition.
tropholytic zone
Being The Deeper Part Of A Lake In Which Dissimilation Of Organic Matter Tends To Predominate.
river continuum concept
Concept that as water flows rapidly from shady headwater streams with much coarse plant debris, and passes through reaches of higher order to become sluggish lowland streams, there is a change in the functional feeding groups of invertebrates (shredders, collectors, scrapers, predators). (see also nutrient spiralling)
biome
Climatically determined group of plants and animals spread over a wide area.
keystone species
A species present in small numbers, but essential for the persistence of many other species in the community.
biodiversity
a. Genetic variation within organisms. b. Range of species in an environment. c. Full spectrum of the world’s ecological communities and their associations with the physical environment.
conservation biology
A new, integrated science that attempts to conserve biodiversity, developed in response to the human-induced, world-wide wave of habitat destruction and extinction
extinction
Disappearance of a population or species from a given habitat.
