biodiversity- animals Flashcards
bilateral symmetry
Animals having only one imaginary line that can divide them along the long axis to produce two halves that are mirror images. Therefore such animals have right and left sides, a distinct head end (anterior), a distinct tail end (posterior), an upper surface (dorsal) and a lower surface (ventral). Also applied to flower shapes.
radial symmetry
Animal in which division in any longitudinal plane will divide the body into two equal halves. Also applied to flower shapes.
hydrostatic skeleton
hydrostatic skeleton
Fluid-filled, constant volume cavity that permits muscles to be re-stretched after contraction.
exoskeleton
exoskeleton
Skeleton on the outside of an animal, with the muscle attachments on the inside.
endoskeleton
an internal skeleton, such as the bony or cartilaginous skeleton of vertebrates.
closed circulatory system
Blood is confined within blood vessels and does not mix directly with fluids surrounding the cells.
open circulatory system
It is primarily found in invertebrates. Here, the blood flows freely through cavities since there are no vessels to conduct the blood.
metamerism
Segmentation of the body. Occurs in annelids, arthropods and chordates.
