Q
Marchiafava-Bignami disease
A
Marchiafava-Bignami disease is a rare disorder seen in those with alcoholism and malnutrition.
Patients often present with non specific clinical features such as a motor or cognitive disturbance. It is characterised by progressive demyelination and subsequent necrosis of the corpus callosum.
The course may be acute or chronic and is marked by dementia, spasticity, dysarthria, and an inability to walk. Patients may lapse into coma and die, survive for many years in a demential condition, or occasionally recover (in other words anything can happen!).
