Alcoholic Blackouts Flashcards

Q
Alcoholic blackouts
A
The term ‘alcoholic blackout’ refers to transient memory loss induced by intoxication. There is no associated loss of consciousness. These blackouts are not pathognomic of alcohol dependence and occur in a large proportion of the general population of social drinkers.
Alcoholic blackouts are associated with an early onset of drinking, high peak levels of alcohol, and past history of head injury. Blackouts do not predict long term cognitive impairment.
