maps and atlases Flashcards
latitude
Lines of latitude are called parallel arcs.
These parallels are different sizes.
The equator is the largest arc.
The arcs get smaller the further away they are from the equator.
longitude
Lines of longitude pass through both the north and south poles.
Longitude lines always go the long way between north and south.
Lines of longitude are sometimes called meridians.
degrees and minutes
A degree of longitude at the equator covers about 111 kilometers.
One degree of latitude also covers about 11 kilometers.
Each degree of latitude and longitude can be divided into 60 minutes.
One minute of longitude at the equator is about 1,85 kilometers.
kind of scales in an atlas
1) world: map of the world or map of continents
2) local: map of provinces or map of a country
3) regional: parts of a continent
scale
a way of accurately representing objects smaller than their real size
scale in an atlas
The size of the areas covered by the map influence the map scale.
The larger the area is covered by the map, the smaller the map scale.
scale on maps
1) word scale
2) line scale
3) ratio scale
maps
an exact number of times smaller than the areas they show.
scale compares…
compares real distance on the land to the smaller distances on maps.
word scale
uses a statement in words to describe the scale of the map.
line scale
shows the scale by drawing a line on the map.
atlas maps show scales as a line scale.
ratio scale
represents the scale as the same unit of measurement on both and the ground.
