Manufactured Timber Flashcards
What does MDF stand for?
Medium Density Fibreboard
Advantages of MDF
flat, smooth surface
cheaper to buy then pure timber
available in large sheets
doesn’t expand due to temperature
able to mimic pure timber
manufacturing costs are lower per product - less glue needed etc
Disadvantages of MDF
easily affected by moisture
not a nice finish
normally needs to be laminated for use
cannot withstand high pressures compared to natural timber
Advantages of Plywood
strong
flexible
comes in many sizes and thicknesses - many applications
resists warping
lightweight
crossing grains - increase strength in both directions
Disadvantages of Plywood
susceptible to moisture
prone to splintering
crossed grains make sawing difficult
Advantages of Chipboard
affordable
versatile
makes use of waste timber
Disadvantages of Chipboard
prone to swelling and damage from moisture
less durable than MDF
Advantages of Block Board
strong
durable
inexpensive
wide range of applications and availability
Disadvantages of Block Board
not good for outdoor used
low quality
Advantages of OS Board
strong
water resistant
available in large sheets
pliable
fairly affordable
Disadvantages of OS Board
swells with water exposure
unattractive appearance
usually made with formaldehyde (poisonous)
heavy
not a good strength to weight ratio
