Design, Technology and Our World Flashcards
Mass Production
when hundreds/thousands of the same product are produced
Assembly Line
line of workers & equipment in a factory
- product is gradually assembled as it moves down each stage of the line
Automated Production
the use of automatically controlled equipment to manufacture products
Market Pull
a new product being produced in response to demand from the market
Technology Push
development in materials, components of manufacturing methods that allow the development of new products
Consumer Rights Act 2015
protects the buyer when they buy a defective product, or did not receive the expected level of service.
- covers for faulty, counterfeit good, poor services, etc
Advantages of CAD
- improved quality than by hand
- 2D and 3D models can be created and edited easily
- textures/colours can be added to make models more realistic
- design is securely stored, and can be shared/collaborative
Disadvantages of CAD
- requires expensive hardware to model & render
- designers will need training to use effectively
- can be slower to generate initial ideas
- software may be expensive to keep up-to-date
Advantages of CAM
- faster than traditional manufacture
- high degree of accuracy is easier to achieve
- consistent & repeatable processes are easier to do
- less waste is produced
- lower risk of human error
Disadvantages of CAM
- machinery is expensive
- machinery needs regular maintenance and servicing
- traditional jobs & skills are displaced
- costs usually inhibit CAM in small-scale manufacture
Fairtrade
requires companies to pay sustainable prices to workers, stopping the discrimination against the poorer, weaker farmers
