Definition of manic episode
A
Elevated or irritated mood with at least three of the following characteristic behaviors:
i. Grandiosity
ii. Decreased need for sleep
iii. Talkativeness
iv. Flight of ideas
v. Distractibility
vi. Increased activity
vii. Excessive involvement in pleasurable activities with disregard for consequences

Impact on function
A
a. Judgment is poor, and clients tend to engage in acting-out behaviors.
b. Impulsiveness and grandiosity interfere with vocational and social activities.
c. Hyperactivity is present and impairs functioning during episodes.

OT Tx plan
A
- Monitor behavior changes, and provide a structured environment to help clients manage
behavior. - Help clients focus and set limits to contain manic impulses.
- Assist clients in coping with the possibility of chronic illness by learning signs of impending
episodes. - Help clients alter their lifestyle, monitor their symptoms, and involve family members.
- Do not engage in arguments.
- Ignore comments about inflated behaviors and superior skills; encourage client to reengage
in task. - Allow autonomy as much as possible.
- Redirect energies to perform physical activities.
- Offer simple, structured tasks
- Improve self-esteem and increase motivation.
- Provide opportunities for self-expression.
- Provide outlets for different emotions.
- Provide opportunities to focus on values, beliefs, spirituality, and emotional regulation
