Why did Manchester need rebranding

A

-badley built flats
- poorly lit areas and open spaces occupied by gangs and drug addicts and decline led to gun crime and violence
-98% of flats were council owned
-30% of people in the area were in a state of poor health
- bad reputation and negative image - decline in textile and mill factories, became known as the deindustrialised city
- Manchester was bombed by the IRA
- high unemployment, in 1981 it was over 20% and 207,000 manufacturers lost their jobs

What did they do ?

A

-Hulme was redeveloped as of slum clearance in the 1960s
-lots of new high rise flats built
-new shopping area roads and community facilities
-over 40,000 houses and 53,000 jobs created from construction and business opportunity like the new shopping centre
-large area of derelict land reclaimed and 3,000 new businesses established
- Hulme attracted wealthy residents and workers
-as Hulme was close to Manchester city centre it became the place from new wealthy city dwellers

What was east Manchester’s industry and what happened

A

It was dominated by heavy industries and cotton mills and during deindustrialisation people left to find work so it became depopulated.
This resulted in companies relocating due to lack of skilled workers
