Managing the coast Flashcards
How can coastal risk be reduced?
Through adaption and mitigation
What is meant by adaption in terms of coastal management?
Coping with impacts by managing the coast (Short term solution)
What is meant by mitigation in terms of coastal management?
Reducing its causes by limiting climate change (Long term solution)
What are the strengths of coastal management?
Adaption to risk of recession / flooding and reducing the risk is often feasible
What are the limitations of coastal management?
It is often controversial due to the expense and the result of disequilibrium in the sediment cell
What is hard engineering?
Hard engineering solutions are long term structures that stop or alter coastal processes fighting nature
What is the strength of hard engineering?
It can quickly reduce risk
What is a limitation of hard engineering?
It is expensive and often environmentally damaging
What are examples of hard engineering?
Groynes to prevent long shore drift, rip rap, sea walls, revetments, and offshore breakwaters
What is soft engineering?
No long term structures are built but instead it works with coastal processes
What are some strengths of soft engineering?
It is cheaper and more eco-friendly
What is a limitation of soft engineering?
It may not reduce risk enough
What are some examples of soft engineering?
Beach nourishment, cliff regrading, sand dune stabilisation and salt-marsh creation
What are Ecosystem services?
Benefits provided by nature for human wellbeing
What are the ecosystem services provided by salt marshes?
Bio protection from storm surges and habitat for wildlife resulting in increased tourism as well as carbon storage to help with climate change mitigation
