ICZM Flashcards
What does ICZM mean?
Integrated Coastal Zone Management
What does ICZM do?
Manages large areas of the coasts instead of fragmented management which is the management of individual towns
What sort of shift is ICZM in coastal management?
ICZM is a paradigm shift in coastal management
Why is ICZM a better approach?
- It manages the entire sediment cell avoiding disequilibrium
- it consults all the players benefitting the whole community
- It aims to be sustainable delivering long term benefits
How could the method of ICZM be considered to act?
Holistically considering all factors
When is a cost-benefit analysis conducted?
A cost-benefit analysis is carried out before a coastal-management project is given the go ahead
What are the two types of costs and benefits?
- Tangible where costs and benefits are know and can be given a monetary value
- Intangible where costs may be difficult to asses but are important such as the visual impact of a revetment
What happens when a projects costs outweigh the benefits?
The project is unlikely to go ahead
What is an environmental impact assessment (EIA)?
An EIA is a quantitative means of estimating the environmental changes arising from a proposal in order to asses the developments potential problems and benefits
When is an EIA carried out?
The law requires that an EIA is carried out before any new development proposals are approved
What are the criteria on an EIA?
The criteria vary depending on the proposal but tend to be fairly standard looking at environmental, economic and social impacts?
