Managing Ethical Behaviour Flashcards
Ethics
In order to discuss ethics, we need a definition:
Rules and guidelines that evolve over time in a society to enhance coexistence
Principles that guide our behaviour
Guidelines for deciding what is right and wrong
Ethics govern our relationships with others
The key principles of Ethics
There have been many attempts to reduce ethics to a small number of key principles. For example, Toffler has suggested that at the heart of ethical business practice, there are three fundamental principles:
Honesty
Promise-keeping
Doing no harm
Why should business care about ethics
Ethical behaviours support a more harmonious, and therefore a more productive workplace

An Example of Ethical Principles related to IS/IT: The Australian Computer Society (ACS) Code of Ethics
4.1 To uphold and advance the honour, dignity and effectiveness of the profession of information technology and in keeping with high standards of competence and ethical conduct, a member must:
be honest, forthright and impartial, and
loyally serve the community, and
strive to increase the competence and prestige of the profession, and
use special knowledge and skill for the advancement of human welfare.
Business/organisational ethics
Organisations have the task of creating policies and operational compliance processes. Once the policy is drawn up, codes of work practice are developed that support compliance across the enterprise.
An example is a student conduct policy
