Big Data Visualisation Promotes Good Business Decisions Flashcards
Data visualisation
Data visualisation is the visual representation of data, to facilitate the exploration of that data, to generate insights that can increase understanding, and to inform decision making.
Advantages of data visualisation
“By visualizing information, we turn it into a landscape that you can explore with your eyes - a sort of information map. And when you’re lost in information, an information map is kind of useful”
The whole is greater than the sum of the parts
Identify patterns and themes - Instead of summarising, think about going from a great variety and volume of data and connecting to another
Is data visualisation a single tool
Data visualisation is not a single tool but rather a set of techniques which can make use of various tools and services. It involves displaying data sets in visual, including video, formats.
Purpose of data visualisation
The aim is to reveal patterns by presenting the data in particular ways ( eg, by context or business). It underpins the growing use of infographics, especially in the media, to communicate key information quickly and in an easily comprehensible format.
How to visualise data
While creating data visualisations traditionally required sophisticated technical skills, tools (including Excel) are now appearing which make it possible for non-specialists to create these kinds of visualisations.

To generate the best visuals for displaying your data:
Understand the data you are trying to visualise, including its volume and variety (the uniqueness of data values in a column)
Determine the message you want to communicate
Know your audience
Use a visual that conveys the information in the best and simplest form
Sparklines
Sparklines are miniature charts that fit into a single cell. Since they’re so compact, you can place a large number of them in your worksheets. For example, you could place one sparkline on each row to show trends within that row. All three types can display markers at important points, such as the highest and lowest points, to make them easier to read.
3 different types of sparklines
: Line, Column, and Win/Loss.
Line and column
Line and Column work the same as line and column charts.
Win/loss
Win/Loss is similar to Column, except it only shows whether each value is positive or negative, instead of how high or low the values are.
Conditional formatting
Excel gives us several tools that will make analysing data easier.
You can apply formatting to one or more cells based on the value of the cell. You can highlight interesting or unusual cell values, and visualize the data using formatting such as colors, icons, and data bars.
Pivot tables
a tool that allows you to reorganize and summarize data to obtain a desired report, without changing the spreadsheet. Pivot Table reports make the data in your worksheets much more manageable by summarising the data and allowing you to manipulate it in different ways.
