A patient comes into a & e e very psychotic and distressed. You do not know anything about their history but are worried because they are acting in an agressive manner. What drug treatment would be most appropriate if non drug treatments aren’t working?
Oral Lorazepam ( 1 - 2mg) if this is unsuccessful then consider a 1 -2mg IM lorazepam injection
A patient with a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia comes into a & e very psychotic and distressed. You are worried because they are acting in an agressive manner. What drug treatment would be most appropriate if non drug treatments aren’t working?
Oral lorazepam and/or haloperidol 5mg
If unsuccessful then lorazepam IM injection ( 1 - 2mg)
In extreme cases lorazepam and haloperidol 5mg IM (not in the same syringe)
If this is given monitor repiratory rate, pulse and BP every 5 - 10 minutes for 1 hour
Is a typical or atypical antipsychotic usually first line in the treatment of schizophrenia?
Atypical
When do you use clozapine?
