What is the triad of symptoms seen in ADHD?
Inattention
Hyperactivity Impulsivity
- These are developmentally inappropriate, pervasive, impairing and long standing
What co morbid problems are commonly seen with ADHD?
- Problems with social communication
- Learning difficulties
- Attachment difficulties
- Mood and anxiety problems
- Substance use
What is the diagnostic criteria for ADHD?
- ICD criteria (hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention) associated with at least moderate impairement based on interview and/or direct observation.
This must be pervasive occuring in tow or more important settings (eg school and family
What dietary advice should be given regarding a child with ADHD?
- Balanced diet, good nutrition and regular exercise
- If there is a link between food/drink and behaviour keep a diary and if there is a specific link refer to a dietician.
What is the first line treatment for ADHD in pre school children?
Parent training/education programmes (Drug treatment is not recommended for pre school children with ADHD)
What is the first line treatment for school age children with ADHD with moderate impairment ?
Parent education programmes
Possible psychological therapies for the child.
What is the first line treatment for school age children with ADHD with severe impairment ?
Drug treatment is the first line treatment.
The 1st line treatments
would be stimulant drugs such as ritalin (methylphenidate)
and dexamfetamine Atomexitine is the second line drug treatment.
Third line would be off licence use of antidepressants and antipsychotics.
What are the two main problems in autism spectrum disorder?
Problems with:
1. Social communication and interaaction
2. Restricted/repetitive patterns of thinking.
In order for a diagnosis to be made these must cause clinically significant impairment in functioning and the disturbances are not better explained by an intellectual disability.
