Management of cold environments: Flashcards
Why do cold environments need managing?
- Cold environments are fragile and need protecting.
Current management of cold environments:
- Tourism
- Exploitation
- Climate change.
Tourism: current management
Sustainable tourism is becoming a growing industry, helping to reduce the effects humans have on their trips to fragile cold environments. Charities such as WWF are promoting sustainable alpine
tourism in order to protect these areas.
e.g tourists are educated on the risks to cold environments and contribute to charities which protect.
Exploitation: Current management.
- Protected by law so that natural resources cannot be exploited.
- Example: Antarctic Treaty and Madrid protocol have banned mining in Antarctica. Ban on fishing and military activity.
Climate change: Current management.
Strategies to mitigate such catastrophic effects.
COP 21:
- Aim to limit global. temperatures to 2 degrees celcius above pre-industrial levels.
- Meet every 5 year to improve goals.
EU 20-20-20:
- 20% reduction in GHG
emissions and commitment to
20% of energy coming from
renewable sources and 20%
increase in energy efficiency
by 2020
-EU has suggested it will
increase its emissions
reduction to 30% if major GHG
producing countries also
improve their targets.
- Charity campaigns and awareness:
-Greenpeace is an example of a
charity spreading awareness of
cold environments’ fragility.
