Fluvioglacial landforms of erosion and deposition Flashcards
What is an example of a Meltwater channel?
Ellesmere Island, Canada
What are meltwater channels?
Streams of meltwater (melted glacier) formed by higher temperatures. Channels can flow within, in front of, and around the glacier. Highly erosive and can deposit material when they run out of energy.
What are Kames?
A deposited mound of sediment left in the path of a retreating glacier.
How do kames form?
Material collects within a depression on top of the glacier. When the glacier melts completely, the material is left on the valley floor.
What are the different types of Kames?
Kame terrace
Kame delta
Crevasse Kame
What is a Kame Terrace?
A deposited mound of sediment at the sides of the valley.
What is a Kame delta?
Kames that form in proglacial lakes.
1) Subglacial channel is formed due to the pressure from the glacier.
2) Channel then transports glacial material downstream.
3) As the subglacial channel meets the proglacial lake, it loses energy and deposits the material there.
Crevasse kames?
Result from fluvial deposition of sediments in surface crevasses. Ice melts deposited onto the valley floor to form small hummocks.
What are eskers?
A long, winding ridge of glacial deposition.
An esker is a mould of glacial meltwater
channels.
What are Outwash plains?
The meltwater loses energy as it is under less pressure, so it deposits the material in front of the glacier. Material is deposited into sorted
layers
