Landscapes of Glacial Deposition: Flashcards
What are Drumlins?
Egg-shaped hills. Forms when a glacier moves over the moraine in the valley, it isn’t exactly known how they form.
Formation of a Drumlin:
1) As glacier meets the moraine it begins to travel over it. Can’t erode the resistant rock located in the morraine.
2) As the glacier moves over the moraine, it smooths material on the back slope.
Drumlins characteristics?
Uphill slope is called the stoss and the downhill slope is called the Lee. Likely to be resistant rock in the middle of the Drumlin but closer to the stoss end. Composed of Glacial till.
What are Erratics?
A large boulder that is of a different rock type to surrounding rock.
What are Moraines?
Deposits of eroded material that are
transported with the glacier.
What are the different types of moraines?
- Ground moraines
- Terminal moraines
- Recessional moraines
- Lateral moraines
- Medial moraines
Ground moraines:
- sediment transported beneath the glacier, smeared over underlying bedrock.
Terminal moraines:
Ridges of sediment piled up at the furthest extent of an advancing glacier.
Recessional moraines:
retreating glacier’s often experience periods of stability where a secondary ridge can form at the glacier’s snout.
Lateral moraines:
material deposited on the sides of
a glacier, leaving a ridge when the ice melts.
Medial moraines:
formed from two lateral moraines
meeting in the middle of a glacier and
depositing material.
What are Till plains?
Till is unsorted glacial material. Till plains are formed when an ice sheet detaches from the main glacier and melts, causing all the till on top and within the glacier to be deposited onto the valley floor.
