o Frequently stems from the managers false assumption that delegation may be interpreted as a lack of ability on his/her part to do the job correctly or completely
o Leaders set themselves up for failure taking it all on themselves
o make them look lazy or incompetent, some fear the subordinate will resent having item delegated to them
o Another frequent cause of underdelegating is the managers desire to complete the whole job personally due to a lack of trust in the subordinate
Manager believes that he or she needs the experience or can do it better/faster
o lack job experience or in delegation itself
o Control issue/Perfection issue
o New managers find it difficult to assume the manager role
Underdelegating
o Poor managers of time, spending much of their time trying to get organized
o feel insecure in their ability
o keep doing over and over again will cause burn out and decrease satisfaction and productivity
Overdelegating
o Delegating at the wrong time
o To wrong person
o For the wrong reason
o Delegating tasks/responsibilities that are beyond the capability of the person to whom they are being delegated
o Ex: delegating decision making without providing adequate information
Improper delegation
- plan ahead, identify necessary skills, select most capable person, communicate clearly, empower the delegate, set deadlines and monitor progress, monitor the role and promote guidelines, evaluate the performance, reward and accomplishment
Effective delegating
never delegated
