What is mastitis

A
  • occurs during lactation
  • painful, signs of inflammation
  • Possible necrosis - severe cases
  • Cytology shows degenerative neutrophils with intra- and extra-cellular bacteria
    • usually califorms, staphylococcus sp., streptococcus sp.
  • Treatment:
    • Broad spectrum antibiotics (until culture/sensitivity results)
    • Pain medications
    • Warm packing
    • IV fluids - systemically ill
    • surgical removal of abscess/necrotic tissue

A
  • Occurs during weaning or psuedopregnancy
  • Painful, signs of inflammation
  • Cytology shows no bacteria
  • Treatment:
    • Anti-inflammatories
    • Bellywrap
    • Decrease milk production
      • withhold food 24 hrs
      • ration water ½ normal intake
    • Dopamine agonists ⇣Prolactin production

  • 26% after 2nd estrus
