Q

List the major components of the male reproductive system. Give the embryonic origins of the system.

A

Testis= site of spermatogenesis

  • composed of seminiferous tubules with Sertoli cells
  • surrounded by tunicae vaginalis and tunica albuginea (white)

Epididymis= long coiled tubule with head, body and tail

  • feeds into the ducus deferens

Ductus deferens= CUT IT IN VASECTOMY

Q

Trace the formation of a sperm cell from its origin as a spermatogonium to a Spermatozoon/spermatozoa found in the seminiferous tubule lumen.

A
  • sperm is formed in seminerferous tubules
  • through strait tubule into the rete testis
  • efferent ductules into the ductus Vas deferens
  • then through pelvic urethra and out through penule urethra

Q

List all secretions of Leydig (interstitial cells) and Sertoli cells.

A

Part of testis

Sertoli cells- in seminiferous tubules

  • secrete:
    • testicular fluid-support, protect and nourish spermatogenic cells
    • ABP- part of germ cell differentiation
    • AMH- prevent mullerian duct
    • Inhibin- supress secretion of FSH

Interstitial cells (leydig)- in interstitium

  • secrete testosterone

Q

Describe the adluminal and basal compartments of the seminiferous tubule and the blood-testis barrier.

A

Sertoli cells form tight junctions with one another and divide seminiferous epithelium into two compartments

  • basal compartment- spermatagonia reside here
  • adluminal compartment- once division starts, early spermatocytes pass through barrier into this compartment. (Isolated from blood!)

Q

List the possible accessory sex glands among the domestic species and in particular define the microanatomy of the prostate gland

A

Accessory sex glands

  • Bulbourethral Glands
    • mucous secretions lubricate urethra
  • Prostate Gland
    • lined by simple cuboidal columnar epithelium
    • branched tubuloalveolar gland
    • surrounded by fibroelastic capsule
  • Ampullary Glands
  • Vesicular Glands

A

Sertoli Cells

  • can be identified by unique nucleus (paler)
  • no sperm production without them
  • blood testes barrier
  • support protect and nourish spermatogenic cells
  • also protect spermatids from immune system
  • RELEASE ABP and INHIBIN and AMH

Q

Define and Identify

A

Rete testis

  • lined by simple squamous/cuboidal epithelium
  • seminiferous tubules terminate in tubuli recti which empty in the channels of the rete testis
  • rete testis empty into efferent ductules which lead to the epididymal ducts
17
Q

Identify

A
18
Q

Identify and Explain

A

Seminiferous tubules empty into tubuli recti which go to rete testis.

Rete testis connects with efferent ductules in the head of epididymis.

Efferent ductules empty into the epididymal ducts which empty into the ductus deferens.
