Abdominal Wall: Canine Flashcards
Borders of the abdominal wall
Borders of the abdominal wall
- from costal arch to pelvis
- from ventral border of epaxial muscles to the linea alba
Four Quadrants
- Craniodorsal
- Caudodorsal
- Cranioventral
- Caudoventral
Nine Regions
- Zyphoid region
- hypochondriac region
- unbilical region
- lateral abdominal region
- pubic region
- inguinal region
lable the regions of the abdominal wall
Blood supply of abdominal wall
(list key elements in the four quadrants)
Craniodorsal Quadrant
- Phrenicoabdominal artery
Caudodorsal Quadrant
- Deep circumflex iliac artery
Cranioventral Quadrant
- cranial superficial epigastric
- cranial epigastric
Caudoventral Quadrant
- caudal epigastric
- caudal superficial epigastric

Revisit ppt slide on ext oblique fibrous components
Inguinal ring
muscular lacuna
vascular lacuna
Explain why the rectus sheeth is surgically important
= the rectus sheeth is comprised of the aponeuroses of the abdominal oblique mm. and the transversus abdominis m.
It is important to cut at the linea alba where all these converge in the center, so that you do as little damage as possible to the associated layerd muscles. (see slide)
Inguinal canal
Inguinal canal
- Location: between superf. and deep inguinal ring.
- Important becasue it is the area where testicals can become retained.
- in male-vaginal tunic comes through
- in female- vaginal process comes through
Compare features of hores and cow abdominal wall
Compare features of hores and cow abdominal wall
Horse
- internal abdominal oblige originates solely from tuber coxae
Cow
- internal abdominal oblique comes from lumbar vertebrae and fascia and tuber coxae
Identify
tunica flava abdominis
= Deep fascia of trunk in large animals
- lots of elastic tissue
- supports the heavy weight of abdominal viscera in horse and cow
- yellowish appearance
Surgical relevence- if you slit through elasticy shit, it recoils. important to suture very well so that elasticity will not result in opening of the would
whats up with this horse?

whats wrong with this cow?
This is example of normal paralumbar fossa
Normal= depressed driangular region caudal to last rib
Bad= bloated/ protuding region= gas/digestive issue
