Functional Anatomy- Canine Pelvic Limb Flashcards
1
Q
whats up with the dog on the right?
A
Hip Displasia
- disarticulation of the hip socket
- happens due to poor formation of the hip joint
- inherited defect
- developmental defect
- Treatment:
- TPO= reposition acetbulum
- changes the orientation of the hip socket
- recommended for younger dogs
- FHO= take head of femur off
- takes away pain, but not good for big dogs
- Total hip replacement= technical best medicine
- ball and socket are replaced
- very expensive
- TPO= reposition acetbulum
2
Q
whats up with this little guy?
A
Femoral head necrosis
- occurs in small breed dogs
- unknown etiology
- pain upon forced abduction and extension of limb
3
Q
Stifel joint: capsul and ligaments
A
Stifel Joint= femur attachment to leg
Three joints share one synovial capsul
- femorotibial joint
- femoropatellar joint
- proximal tibiofibular joint
4 ligaments attach femur to leg bones
- medial and lateral collateral ligaments
- cranial and caudal crutiate ligaments
4
Q
Whats up with this joint?
A
Cranial cruciate tear
- most common cause of rear limb lameness in dog
- caused by sudden rotaten of the limb when joint is flexed
- rupture of ligamnet allows forward movement of tibia (cranial drawer sign)—leads to degenerative arthritis and pain
- Treatment: three options
- TTA: stabilization
- counteract force of tibial thrust by changing the angle of pull of the patellar tendon
- Extracapsular: joint stabilization
- suture from lateral aspect of femur to cranial aspect of tibia.
- eliminates tibial thrust
- TPLO: stabilization of stride
- changing angle and relationship of femur and tibia by repositioning tibial head and setting with plate.
- will not eliminate cranial drawer sign
- TTA: stabilization

Q
something is wrong with the left leg…
A
Luxating patella
- medial lixation
- happens in small breeds (anatomical abnormalities)
- Graded scale 1-4 (1-not too bad—4-totaly wrong)
- Treatment:
6
Q
explain whats going on here…
A
Calcanean Tendon Rupture
Calcanean tendon is made of 5 different tendons
- gastrocnemius
- sdf
- biceps femoris
- semitendinosus
- gracilis
Picture shows different types of tendon rupture
- partial rupture
- hock droped and toes curled under
- complete rupture
- hock drops to ground
