Male Reproductive System Flashcards
1
Q
What is the male reproductive pathway? (From the testis to the urethra).
A
- Testes (Seminiferous tubules)
- Epididymus
- Vas deferens
- Prostate*
- Urethra
2
Q
Prostate* (in depth sperm pathway before urethra).
A
- Vas deferens
- Seminal glands (secretes fluids into prostate).
- Prostate (secretes fluid in prostatic urethra).
- Bulbourethral glands (secretes fluids into membranous urethra)
- Then everything goes down the spongy urethra.
*Everything goes in a downward order.
3
Q
Seminal glands
A
- Secretes alkaline fluid into prostatic glands.
- Increase sperm motility and fertility
4
Q
Testes
A
- Site of sperm formation (spermatogenesis).
- Also produces hormone Testosterone
5
Q
Seminiferous tubules
A
Site of sperm formation
6
Q
Epididymus
A
Stores immature sperm (for maturation).
7
Q
Ductus/Vas Deferens
A
- Sperm transport (from epididymus to urethra) during ejaculation.
8
Q
Prostate gland
A
- Secretes fluid to help activate sperm
- Contribute to 1/3 volume of semen
- Secretes into prostatic urethra
- Inferior to bladder
9
Q
Bulbourethral glands
A
- Help neutralize acidic environment induced by urine.
10
Q
Spongy urethra
A
- Runs through penis
- Facilitates ejaculation of sperm
11
Q
Scrotum
A
- Skin surrounding testes
- Maintain viability of sperm
- 3 degrees C less than average body temp.
12
Q
Why is seminal fluid alkaline?
A
So the semen doesn’t die when it enters the vagina (because the vagina is acidic).
13
Q
Penis
A
Copulatory/Penetrating device
