male reproductive histology - test 1 Flashcards
Where does spermatogenesis occur?
seminiferous tubules
name the different sections of the ejactulatory pathway
Seminiferous tubules
Straight tubules
Rete testis
Efferent ductules
Epididymis
Vas deferens
Where are we?

seminiferous tubule
Name the arrows

What are the different cell stages in spermatogenesis
spermatogonium –> primary spermatocyte –> secondary spermatocyte –> early spermatid (round spermatid) –> later spermatid (elongating spermatid)
name it

Why is the blood-testis barrier so important?
As spermatogonium mature, they can no longer come in contact with the immune system, as they will be recognized as a foreign invader. Therefore, the blood-testis barrier acts as a protective barrier for the developing spermatogonium
name it

What hormone acts on sertoli cells? What hormone acts on leydig cells?
FSH –> Sertoli cells
LH –> leydig cells
Name it. Why does it look so fatty/oily?

Leydig cells
It looks fatty/oily because it secretes testosterone, which is a lipid soluble hormone.

Where are we in the testis?

straight tubules
Where are we in the testis?

mediastinum, which contains the rete testis

Where are we in the testis?

Where are we in the testis?

Where are we in the testis? What is the primary epithelial cell?

epididymis
pseudostratified columnar with stereocilia

Where are we in the testis? How can you tell?

vas deferens
pseudostratified columnar cells with steriocilia WITH a shit ton of smooth muscle surrounding the tubule

Where are we?

spermatic cord
Why do the testis hng outside of the body?
spermatogenesis is temperature related at 34oC, which is lower than body temperature
What is cryptorchidism?
failure of the testes to descend from the abdominal cavity
