Male Repro Flashcards
State the internal genital organs of the male reproductive system (7)
Testes Epididymides Vas deferentes Seminal vesicles Ejaculatory ducts Prostate Bulbourethak glands
What divides the scrotum into two
A midline septum
What is the name of the smooth muscle contained in the superficial fascia of the scrotum. What does it do?
Tunica dartos
Regulates the temperature of the testes by expanding and contracting (alters SA to change amount of heat loss)
Why are the testes contained within the scrotum
Function better at lower temperature
What’s the name of the think fibrous capsule that surrounds each testis? What do they do
Tunica Albuginea
Have projections from the inner surface of the capsule that form septa, that divide the testis into lobes
What is the shape of testes
Flattened egg shape
How do seminiferous tubules link up to the epididymus?
Each lobule of the testis contain several seminiferous tubules, that open into a network of tubes called the rete testes - efferent ductules - epididymus
What is the function of seminiferous tubules?
Site of meiosis, where spend is produced
What lies adjacent to the seminiferous tubules, that produces hormones? What hormones are produced when stimulated by LH?
The interstitial cells of Leydig
Androgens, testosterone, androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone
What is the role of the gubernaculum
Aid the movement of testes into the scrotum at or near birth.
What is the arterial supply of the scrotum?
Posterior scrotal arteries - terminal branches of the internal pudendal
Anterior scrotal arteries - terminal branches of the external pudendal - branches of femoral artery
State the 3 layers of fascia that cover the cord
Internal spermatic fascia
Cremasteric fascia
External spermatic fascia
What is the epididymus and where is it located
Posterior to the testes
Highly coiled tube (increase SA)
Transports, stores and matures sperm cells
Where is the vas deferens and what is its function?
Joins the tail end of the epididymus
Thick walled tube
Transports mature sperm to urethra ready for ejaculation
What are seminal vesicles?
Sac-like pouches that attach to the vas deferens near the base of the bladder
Produce fructose for energy for spermatic (more motility)
What are ejaculatory ducts?
Formed from the merging of seminal vesicles and the vas deferens
Pierces the posterior aspect of the prostate gland
What is the prostate? And it’s function
An encapsulated organ that consists of glandular tissue embedded in a fibromuscular stroma
Prostatic secretions are drained by ducts - open into the prostatic urethra.
Secretes acidic prostatic fluid which makes up 20-30% of the semen
What are the bulbourethral glands?
Small glands located at the base of the penis
Covered by fascia of urogenital diaphragm
Their ducts empty into the urethral lumen
Secretions are added to the seminal fluid, unknown function of fluid
What two things does the penis consist of?
The root and a mobile body
What three masses of erectile tissue does the root consist of?
Bulb of penis, right and left crura
