  • Ask pt to stand w/ back against exam table, legs shoulder-width apart
  • Instruct him to lift his gown to his waist

A
  • Start at iliac crest & palpate down inguinal ligament medially
  • Examine pubic hair for lice, scabies

  • Palpate both sides of penis & inspect urethral meatus

  • Invaginate some scrotal skin when inserting finger into inguinal ring
  • Use cross-handed method
  • Ask pt to cough or valsalva
  • Feel for sudden pressure

A
  • Ask pt to lean over exam table, rest elbows on table, legs apart & knees slightly bent
    OR lateral decubitus position
  • Inspect perianal area:
    Spread cheeks
    Visualize opening
    Check for hemorrhages, fissures, skin tags, & other lesions
  • Apply lubricant to finger
