When examining a male what should there position be?
Male should be standing and the provider should be sitting to assess the male genitalia
What are you physically assessing with the penis?
Inspect penis
- foreskin
- base
- pubic hair
- glans (head)
Palpate:
- shaft
- head of the penis
- urethral discharge
What are you assessing with the scrotum?
Inspect
- size
- shape
- position
- skin
Palpate
-testicles
Make sure testicles are proper distance away from the body.
Transilluminate the scrotum
-normally scrotum should not illuminate unless mass is present.
Assessment of the inguinal area
Inspect
-for hernial on the inguinal and femoral arteries.
Palpate the inguinal and femoral lymph node.
When should we teach a self testicular examination?
13 years and older
What does T.S.E stand for?
T= timing (once a month)
S= shower with warm water to relax scrotum
E= examine, check for changes and report of need be.
Why do we do testicular examinations?
To check for lumps or masses that could correlate with cancer.
However, don’t stress the patient out. Just teach them about becoming familiar with the body for detection.
