Male Genital Anatomy Flashcards
Located between thig (exc. cat and boar)
Scrotum
Scrotum is free of hair except in these animals
Cat, Sheep, Goat
They regulate testicular temperature
Tunica dartos
Cremaster muscle
Pampiniform plexus
It covers the testes
Tunica Vaginalis Propria
A dense, thick connective tissue capsule beneath the tunica vaginalis
Tunica albuginea
Has a smooth muscle coat that moves sperm along in peristaltic waves toward vas deferens; for spermatozoa transportation, nutrition, storage and maturation
Epididymis
Paired accessory gland located dorsolateral to neck of bladder, cranial to the ampullae
Seminal Vesicle / Vesicular Gland
The seminal vesicle is present in these animals:
Stallion, Ruminants, Boar
Cranial to the bladder and on/or around the neck of the bladder, or cranial portion of the pelvic urethra
Prostate Glands
Paired glands lying on either side of pelvic urethra, near ischiatic arch and bulb of the penis, ovoid in shape
Bulbourethral Gland / Cowper’s Gland
The bulbourethral gland is absent in this animal
Dogs
An accessory gland of the deferent ducts
Ampullary gland
This gland acts as reservoirs for sperm
Ampullary Gland
An anti-oxidant and yellowish fluid, secreted by the ampullary gland
Ergothioneine
The ampullary gland is only present in these animals:
Stallion, Bull, Ram
Copulatory organ of the male
Penis
Penile erection due to distention of blood in the ?
Corpus cavernosum
Blood supply of the penis
Internal and External Pudendal Artery
Obturator artery
Innervation of the Penis
Autonomic nerves of the pelvic plexus
Pudendal and Hemorrhoidal Nerves
The external opening of the prepuce
Preputial orifice
A double invagination of skin which contains and covers the free portion of the penis when not erect; covers the body of the penis behind the glans when penis is erect
Prepuce
Long and narrow prepuce; 2 pairs of cranial and caudal preputial muscles, protractors and retractors that draw the preputial opening (forward or backward)
Bull
Has a preputial cavity created by a preputial fold
Stallion
Has narrow prepuce, similar to the bull but not as long
Ram
Prepuce has a small orifice; caudal part (narrow) whilst cranial part (wide)
Boar
These animals tend to urinate inside their prepuce
Swine and Ruminants
These animals extend their penis beyond the sheath
Horses, Cats, and Dogs
This type of penis achieves an erection by straightening its sigmoid flexure via relaxation of the retractor penis muscle. This allows increased blood flow to fill the penis and extend it outwards (the increased blood pressure also unfolds the penis)
Fibroelastic Penis
Their penis is an S-shaped curve, or sigmoid flexure, caudal and dorsal to the scrotum; small erectile tissue as compared to stallion
Bull
Their penis erection will double its length and thickness, with the glans penis enlarged three or more times its normal size; has a large amount of erectile tissue
Stallion
These animals’ penises are characterized by a urethral process extending beyond the glans penis, also has a sigmoid flexure
Ram / Billy
This animal’s sigmoid flexure is pre-scrotal; the cranial portion has no glans but is spirally twisted counterclockwise
Boar
The dog’s penis has bony structure in the cranial portion called the ?
Os penis
This expands greatly at the time of erection and prevents withdrawal during ejaculation
Bulbus glandis
Their penis is short and directed caudally and downward; no glans penis but merely a terminal cap with numerous, 120 spines pointing toward the base of penis
Cat
These animals have a fibroelastic penis
Bull, Ram/Billy, Boar
These animals have musculocavernous penis
Stallion, Dog, Cat
This animal’s prostate gland is over the neck of the bladder and cranial portion of the urethra; has two lateral lobes
Stallion
This animal’s prostate gland can be felt per rectum as a distinct transverse oral protuberance on the cranial end of the pelvic urethra
Bull
This animal’s prostate gland has no body and is defused over a large portion of the pelvic urethra
Ram
This animal’s prostate gland’s body is located dorsal to the bladder and covered by the seminal vesicle.
Boar
This animal’s prostate gland’s two lobes completely surround the neck of the bladder.
