Male Anatomy Flashcards
Describe the passage of the sperm from creation to exiting the male
Seminiferous tubule- straight tubule - efferent ductules - epididymis - vas deferens - bulbous prostrate - membraneous prostrate - penile prostrate
What level do the testes originate at? (In the embryo)
T10
Where does the right testicular vein drain?
Inferior vena cava
What is testicular torsion?
When the blood supply to the testes get twisted- this is a surgical emergency and may cause necrosis of the testes and an autoimmune response of the contralateral testes
What temperature does spermatogenesis need?
35 degrees
Where does the lymph from the testes drain?
Para-aortic lymph nodes
What are the functions of the penis?
Expulsion of urine
Deposition of sperm in female
Removal of competitors sperm
Attraction of mates
What are the contents of the spermatic tubule?
(Rule of 3s)
3 arteries- cremasteric, to vas deferens, testicular
3 veins- testicular, to vas deferens, cremasteric
3 others- ilioingiunal nerve, nerve to vas deferens and lymphatics
What is the cremaster reflex?
Ipsilateral testes rises is the inner thigh is stroked
What are the causes of scrotal swelling?
Testicular torsion Hydrocoele Hernia Inflammation Scrotal oedema Trauma Pampiniform
What is secreted by the seminal vesicles, what is it used for and what is the percentage of the final ejaculate?
Seminal fluid
It contains glucose etc. As energy for swimming sperm, it is ~60% of the volume
What is the substance secreted by the prostrate gland, the function of the substance and the percentage volume of the ejaculate?
Prostrate fluid
Helps the sperm survive in the acidic vagina- it is alkaline
30-35%
What is produced by the bulbourethral glands, what is the function of this substance?
Preejaculate
It helps regulate the acidity of the urethra
What is the blood supply of the testes via?
Testicular artery which is surrounded by the pampiniform plexus
What is the function of the pampiniform plexus?
It cools the blood in the testes which occurs at about 35 degrees
