Q

Analyse the quotation - “Let every _______ hew him down a _____”

A

soldier, bough

This quotation demonstrates Malcolm’s generosity and capability for leadership, since he does not want the glory of defeating Macbeth for himself, but wants to allow all of his men to partake in Macbeth’s defeat. This further demonstrates how shared the personal hatred of Macbeth was by Scotland and how terrible of an impact he had on its people.

Q

Analyse the quotation - “We have met with ____ who ______ beside us”

A

Foes, strike

This quotation demonstrates the extent to which Malcolm has united Scotland against Macbeth, since there was widespread mutiny. This further shows Macbeth’s evil, since a king ordained by God would, from a contemporary standpoint, lead his men and have them die for him, but since he is ordained by evil, his men leave due to his manipulation and cowardice. Since a king was either selected or not selected by God from the beginning, this tells the reader that Macbeth was never meant to be king and he in fact disrupted the natural order by killing Duncan, and this is the reason for the terror in Scotland, and thus ultimately why everyone has united against him under Malcolm, a righteous, god-fearing man.
