This metaphor links Macbeth to the story of Lucifer, who was an angel in heaven but waged war with God and was cast down to Earth. This could perhaps be linking Malcolm to this story to, and warning Macduff that he does not want the crown of Scotland out of fear of falling into sin.

This metaphor demonstrates how Malcolm feels Scotland is suffering tremendously under Macbeth, as he has broken the natural order.

The adjective used makes clear that Macbeth is terrible, but Malcolm also clarifies that he would not make things better, only worsen the state of Scotland and make Macbeth seem great in contrast. The purpose of this however, is to convince Malcolm that Macduff cares for Scotland and not for power by demonstrating a will to fight Macbeth with or without his support.

Macduff’s outburst of grievance for Scotland, as he seemingly loses hope of saving his country leads Malcolm to trust his sincerity, calling him many great names, and consoling him to make him ready to fight.

This comparison between Macbeth and the devil not only demonstrates Macbeth’s evil actions from the viewpoint of others but also further shows how unfit he is to be a king, since a king would need to be appointed by God.

Right after describing Macbeth’s devilish nature and lack of legitimacy as king, he turns to God as his testimony as to who guided him to save Scotland. not only juxtaposing Malcolm and Macbeth i terms of their motives, but also foreshadowing Malcolm and Macduff’s victory, since a contemporary audience would know that God’s kingdom always triumphs over evil, and only those in communion with God can be worthy of kingship, like Duncan.

Malcolm encourages Macduff to use his grief, through this metaphor, to be victorious over Macbeth, attempting to motivate him to victory. This demonstrates Malcolm’s capability as a righteous leader and demonstrates his commitment to the Kingdom of God, since he is helping others towards victory.
