What are some complications of malaria ?
Cerebral malaria:
Hypoglycaemic Convulsions
Hypoxia
Blackwater fever:
Severe intravascular haemolysis
Acute renal failure
How do you diagnose malaria ?
Thick and thin blood films.
Quantitative buffy coat (QBC).
Rapid antigen test.
What is the treatment for uncomplicated malaria ?
PO Quinine for 7 days and then Doxycyline for 7 days.
What is the treatment for complicated malaria ?
IV Quinine until able to tolerate PO and then Doxycyline for 7 days
What is the malarial medication used to eradicate developing malaria in the liver (Hypnozoites) ?
PO Primaquine - 14 days
