- M. knowlesi

What is the most serious malaria infection?
A
Falciparum (knowlesi also acts like falciparum)

A
- Ongoing fever, cyclical
- Rigors
- Flu-like illness
- Headache
- Back pain
- Myalgia

Thick blood film (diagnosis) x3
Thin blood film (malaria type) x3
Antigen tests
Bloods

What decides a serious/mild infection?
A
Parasitaemia of >2 percent is serious

How is malaria falciparum treated?
A
Mild:
- Oral treatment
- Malarone
- Riamet
Severe:
- ABCDE
- Correct hypoglycaemia
- Rehydrate
- Organ support
- IV treatment artenusate

How are vivax and ovale treated?
A
Chloroquine and then primaquine
