What is it?
Malaria parasites are microorganisms that belong to the genus Plasmodium.
Result
Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by a parasite that commonly infects a certain type of mosquito which feeds on humans.
Symptoms
Fever and flu-like illness, including shaking chills, headache, muscle aches, and tiredness. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea may also occur.
How does malaria spread?
Usually, people get malaria by being bitten by an infective female Anopheles mosquito. Only Anopheles mosquitoes can transmit malaria and they must have been infected through a previous blood meal taken from an infected person.
How do you prevent malaria?
Apply mosquito repellent with DEET (diethyltoluamide) to exposed skin.
Drape mosquito netting over beds.
Put screens on windows and doors.
Treat clothing, mosquito nets, tents, sleeping bags and other. fabrics with an insect repellent called permethrin.
Wear long pants and long sleeves to cover your skin.
