making soluble and insoluble salts Flashcards
how do u make soluble salts
neutralising acids and crystallising the solutions
when do you use the insoluble bass method
when the salt doesn’t contain sodium, potassium or ammonium
what acids are usually used in the insoluble base and titration method
hydrochloric, silfuric or nitric acid
what bases are usually used in the insoluble base method
solid metal oxide or solid metal carbonate
explain the insoluble base method
heat the acid - as hot acid has more energy so it reacts faster with the base, stir base until no more will dissolve, filter out excess base to get a salt solution
when is the titration method used
when the salt contains sodium, potassium or ammonium as they’re soluble
what alkali is usually used in the titration method
sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide or ammonium hydroxide
what does the insoluble bass method result in
acid + bass —> salt + water
what does the titration method result in
acid + bass —> salt + hydrogen
explain the titration method
perform a titration to measure the volumes of acid and alkali needed to neutralise each other, repeat titration without indicator and with the exact volume to get salt solution
explain the process of crystallisation
heat the salt solution until crystals start to form, allow the solution to cool in an evaporating basin for a few days, filter out the crystals to remove excess slat solution, dab them with filter paper to remove last traces of water
what is a precipitate
insoluble solid that forms inside a solution
explain the process of making insoluble salts from precipitation
mix solutions to make a precipitate and leftover solution - spectator ions, filter out salt precipitate, rinse the salt with water to wash off traces of the leftover solution - doesn’t dissolve as insoluble, dab with filter paper to remove traces of water
