esters Flashcards
what are esters used for
flavourings, perfumes, solvents
when do esters form
when a carboxylic acid and alcohol join together
functional group of an ester
COO
what catalyst is often used to make an ester
concentrated sulphuric acid
carboxylic acid + alcohol
—> ester + water
what is a carboxylic acid + alcohol reaction called
esterification or condensation reaction due to water vapour being produced
ethanoic acid + ethanol ->
ethyl ethanoate + water
propanoic acid + methanol ->
methyl propanoate + water
CH3COOH + C2H5OH ->
CH3COOC2H5 + H2O
formula for sulfuric acid
H2SO4
what are esters
volatile compounds with distinctive smells
describe the process of making an ester
mix the carboxylic acid and alcohol together, add a few drops of the catalyst concentrated sulfuric acid and warm it, tip mixture into sodium carbonate solution
why is the carboxylic acid, alcohol and concentrated sulfuric acid mixture tipped into sodium carbonate solution?
to neutralise the sulfuric acid catalyst which is very corrosive
