Major Ideas: Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What are alkanes?
Hydrocarbons that have only single bonds between carbon atoms
How can all hydrocarbons be represented in one single formula?
CxHy
Alkane formula
CnH(2n+2)
What are structural isomers?
Compounds that have the same molecular formula but different structural formulas
What is a substitution rxn?
An atom in a molecule is replaced by a different atom to form a new molecule
What are alkenes?
Hydrocarbons with at LEAST one double carbon-carbon bond
Alkenes formula
CnH(2n)
Properties of alkenes
- Low melting and boiling points
- insoluble in water
Properties of alkanes
Low melting and boiling points
Insoluble in water
What is geometric isomerism?
Same molecular formula, but the groups attached to carbon atoms joined by a double bond are in different positions
What us an addition reaction?
2 new atoms are added across the double bond and the double bond becomes a single bond
