Maintaining H2O and N2 balance Flashcards
What does the body do when the blood is too concentrated?
The pituitary gland releases ADH (antidiuretic hormone)
It causes the kidney to be more permeable
Therefore more water is reabsorbed into the blood
(Volume of urine decreases)
Normal water levels are obtained
What does the body do when the blood is too dilute?
The pituitary gland stops the release of ADH
It causes the kidney to be less permeable
Therefore less water is reabsorbed
(Volume of urine increases)
Normal water levels are obtained
What does the body do to maintain nitrogen levels balanced?
The nitrogen in proteins are digested
And turned into amino acids, which in excess needs to be excreted
Deamination occurs, which turns it to ammonia (toxic)
It’s turned into urea to be excreted (via kidneys) as urine.
