Control of body temperature Flashcards
What happens to the body when it gets too hot?
- Vasodilation
- Hairs lay flat
- Sweating
What happens to the body when it gets too cold?
- Vasoconstriction
- Shivering
- Hairs stand in end
What is vasoconstriction?
The constriction of blood vessels close to the surface of the skin
What is vasodilation?
The opening/dilation of blood vessels close to the surface of the skin
How does hairs standing on end help to prevent heat loss?
Traps a layer of air which can be used as an insulator for the body, preventing heat loss
How does sweating cause the body to lose more heat?
evaporates removing heat energy from the skin
How does shivering help the body maintain heat?
Rapid muscle contractions require energy from respiration and some of this is released as heat.
What controls the bodies temperature?
The thermoregulatory system/centre
