Main Parts Of The Brain Flashcards

1
Q

Cerebrum

A
  • grey matter and white matter in its centre
  • largest part of the brain
  • initiates and coordinates movement and regulates temperature
  • other areas enable speech, judgment, thinking, reasoning, problem solving, emotions, and learning
  • others relate to vision, hearing, touch, and other senses

Q

Cerebral cortex

A
  • The outer gray matter covering the cerebrum
  • covered ridges in brain (gyri) & folds in brain (sulci)
  • 2 hemispheres; left & right
  • Right hemisphere: controls left side
  • Left hemisphere: controls right side
  • the 2 half’s communicate with one another through corpus callosum

Q

Midbrain

A
  • complex structure w many neutron clusters, neural pathways, and other structures
  • these facilitate many functions such as hearing, movement, calculating responses and environmental changes

Q

Medulla

A
  • where the brain meets the spinal cord
  • essential for survival
  • regulate many bodily activities, including heart rhythm, breathing, blood flow, O2 & CO2 levels
  • produces reflexes such as sneezing, vomiting, coughing, and swallowing

Q

Cerebellum

A
  • fist sized portion of the brain
  • has 2 hemispheres
  • outer portion contains neutrons, inner area communicates with the cerebral cortex
  • functions: coordinate voluntary muscle movement, maintain posture & balance
