Brain Coverings: Meninges Flashcards
1
Q
Meninges
A
3 layers of protective covering called meninges surround the brain and the spinal cord
2
Q
Dura mater
A
- outermost layer
- thick & tough
- 2 layers: periostea layer (lines inner dome of the skull) & meningeal layer (below that)
- spaces between these layers allow for the passages or veins and arteries that supply blood flow to the brain
3
Q
Arachnoid
A
- thin, we like layer of connective tissue that does not contain nerves or blood vessels
- below this is the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that cushions the entire nervous system (brain & spinal cord) and continuously circulates around these structures to remove impurities
4
Q
Pia mater
A
- thin membrane that hugs the surface of the brain and follows its contours
- rich in veins and arteries
