Dura mater

A
  • outermost layer
  • thick & tough
  • 2 layers: periostea layer (lines inner dome of the skull) & meningeal layer (below that)
  • spaces between these layers allow for the passages or veins and arteries that supply blood flow to the brain

Arachnoid

A
  • thin, we like layer of connective tissue that does not contain nerves or blood vessels
  • below this is the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that cushions the entire nervous system (brain & spinal cord) and continuously circulates around these structures to remove impurities
