Deep Structures Within The Brain Flashcards
1
Q
Pituitary gland
A
- pea sized structure found deep in the brain behind the bridge of the nose
- governs the function of other glands in the body
- regulates flow of hormones from the thyroid, adrenals, ovaries, and testicles
- it receives chemical signals from the hypothalamus
2
Q
Hypothalamus
A
- sends chemical messages to pituitary glands that control its function
- regulates body temp, synchronizes sleep pattern, controls hunger & thirst
- plays some role in memory and emotion
3
Q
Amygdala
A
- located under each half of the hemisphere
- regulates emotion and memory
- associated with the brains reward system, stress
- fight to flight response
4
Q
Hippocampus
A
- under each side of the temporal lobe
- supports memory, learning, navigation, and perception of space
5
Q
Pineal gland
A
- responds to light and dark, and secretes melatonin, which regulates the circadian rhythms and the sleep-wake cycle
6
Q
Ventricles & Cerebrospinal fluid
A
- the ventricles manufacture cerebrospinal fluid, a water fluid that circulates in and around the ventricles and the spinal cord and between the meninges.
- fluid washes out waste and impurities and delivers nutrients
