The Glorious Revolution
King William and Queen Mary promise to rule subject to the consent of the parliament.
British view: solidified English sovereignty and the power of parliament.
Colonist view: parliament offered the crown to the new monarchs because the people are supreme.
The House of Burgesses
The first representative assembly of the colonies.
Mimicked parliament.
The Haitian Revolution
Code Noir: set of rules designed to keep the slaves in check.
The Constitutional Convention
Address the problems of the weak central government that existed under the articles of confederation and write a new constitution.
The Revolutionary War
Why revolt? The interests of the colonists conflicted with the interests of the British. (taxes, trade restrictions, land policy)
Summoned great public virtue from everyone, even ordinary citizens.
Resulted in independence for each colony.
Shay’s Rebellion
Took place in Massachusetts.
Caused many to question the articles of confederation and admit that the system was not working.
Weak government.
People were fighting with the state governments.
Virtue was not saving them.
Slavery resolutions (constitutional convention)
1) 3/5 of all slaves would be counted for representation to get representation by population.
2) The government would protect slave trade for 20 years.
3) Slaves would be tacitly considered property.
Ratification
The constitution was approved!
